3) Fun Fact About Low Moor💡
Did you know that Low Moor was the site of one of Britain’s worst wartime industrial disasters? On 21st August 1916, a massive explosion occurred at the Low Moor Munitions Company due to the improper storage of picric acid, a chemical used in explosives. The blast tragically claimed 40 lives and injured around 100 more. It caused extensive damage across the area, and debris was reported to have fallen as far as three miles away. A memorial was originally placed in Scholemoor Cemetery to honour the firefighters who lost their lives, but it was later relocated to the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters in Birkenshaw for preservation and public access. It’s a powerful reminder of the critical role places like Low Moor played during the First World War.
