Sometimes it’s the smaller electrical jobs around the house that you just never quite get around to sorting.
A couple of dodgy lights. An old fitting you’ve been meaning to replace. A switch that works when it feels like it.
We’re regularly around Pudsey carrying out these sorts of small electrical jobs, and unlike some , we’re more than happy to do them.
This particular job was for an existing customer who I’ve previously carried out some lighting work for around his home. He recently got back in touch because, once again, his lighting was causing him a few problems.
We had a bit of a laugh about the fact that he doesn’t seem to be having much luck with the lights in his house!
After having a look at what needed doing, I provided a quote to replace several light fittings and sort out a fault with the bedroom lighting.
Replacing the Old Spotlights
Part of the job involved replacing some older brushed brass spotlights around the property.
There wasn’t anything particularly exciting wrong with them. They were simply starting to look dated and the customer wanted something cleaner and a little more modern.
We replaced them with white GU10 fire rated downlights.
These are generally my go to fitting when replacing spotlights in a home.
The white finish blends nicely into a typical white ceiling rather than making the spotlight itself a feature. Whether they're being installed as kitchen spotlights, dining room ceiling lights or general lighting around the house, they give a simple, tidy finish.
There’s another reason I like using them as well.
The bulbs are replaceable.
I’m not a massive fan of fitting integrated LED downlights everywhere if there’s no real need for them. With an integrated fitting, when the LED eventually fails, you may need to replace the complete fitting.
Manufacturers also have a habit of changing designs over the years, so finding an identical replacement several years down the line isn't always straightforward.
With these GU10 spotlights, the fitting can stay where it is and the customer can simply replace the bulb when required.
It also gives them some choice over the bulbs they use, including the brightness and colour temperature.
For me, it just makes sense. I’d rather install something that gives the customer a bit of flexibility and longevity than something that potentially creates another electrician’s visit simply because a light has failed.
A Lighting Fault Sorted While We Were There
The spotlights weren’t the only job on the list.
The customer also had a problem with his bedroom lighting, which had stopped working properly.
After checking it over, we traced the problem to a faulty light switch. The dodgy switch was replaced, the lighting was tested and everything was back working as it should.
Nothing dramatic.
Just another one of those small electrical repairs that can become surprisingly annoying when you live with it every day.
