Sometimes it’s the finishing touches that make all the difference to a kitchen.
This was another small electrical job in Wyke for a returning customer who has used my services quite a few times over the years.
They’d recently had some new tiles fitted in their kitchen. Lovely handmade yellow tiles with black grout, which I thought looked really smart. The existing electrical accessories didn’t quite do the new kitchen justice though, so they asked me to replace the sockets and switches above the kitchen worktops.
The customer asked me to supply something that would suit the new tiles, and we decided on brushed steel Hager Sollysta decorative sockets and switches.
Rather than using the standard white inserts, I recommended going for black inserts and switches.
It was a relatively small detail, but because the tiles had black grout, the black inserts tied everything together nicely. Once they were installed, I thought they suited the kitchen down to the ground.
The customer was really happy with the finished result too.
As with quite a few kitchen socket replacements, it wasn’t quite as simple as taking the old sockets off and putting the new ones on.
Some modifications were needed to the tile work to get the new electrical accessories sitting properly. Decorative sockets tend to show up any imperfections around them, so it’s worth spending a bit of extra time getting everything sitting neatly rather than just fitting them and hoping nobody notices.
We managed to get everything sorted without any problems and the finished sockets looked like they had always been part of the new kitchen.

They’re a good quality, solid electrical accessory from a manufacturer I trust, and that matters.
There are plenty of cheaper decorative sockets available, including some I’ve fitted from the usual electrical retailers over the years. Unfortunately, I’ve also been called back to replace some of them after they’ve failed.
Getting called back to a faulty socket outlet is actually pretty unusual, which is why I’d rather recommend something I know is well made and should last.
It might only be a socket, but if you’re spending good money on handmade kitchen tiles, worktops and everything else that goes into a kitchen, it makes sense to finish it with decent quality electrical accessories as well.
