Lovely hot weather is great when you’re outside enjoying it.
Trying to sleep in a roasting hot bedroom is a different matter altogether.
I was recently contacted by another existing customer in Cleckheaton who had finally had enough of the heat and wanted a ceiling fan light installing in her bedroom.
She lives in a relatively new property and, if you live in a modern or new build home, you’ll probably know exactly what I mean.
They’re generally very well insulated, which is brilliant during winter because they retain heat extremely well. Unfortunately, when we get a spell of hot weather, that heat can also be difficult to get rid of.
You just can’t win.
My old house is pretty much the opposite. Freezing in winter but lovely and cool in summer!
The customer had already started looking online for a ceiling fan with a light and, as you’d probably expect, Amazon had plenty to choose from.
I’m always a little cautious with unknown electrical brands from online marketplaces.
There are some perfectly good products available, but when I’m installing electrical equipment in somebody’s home, I like to know who has manufactured it and have confidence in the quality of the product.
So I did a bit of research for the customer and recommended a Philips ceiling fan light instead.
Philips is a well established manufacturer and this particular fitting turned out to be a really nice bit of kit.
We removed the customer's existing ceiling light and replaced it with the new fan light.
One of the clever things about this particular ceiling fan is that the blades retract when the fan isn't being used.
With the fan switched off, the blades tuck away above the light fitting, so at first glance it simply looks like a modern ceiling light rather than a traditional ceiling fan hanging from the bedroom ceiling.
When you turn the fan on, the clear blades extend out and start circulating the air.
The clear blades are another nice touch because they help to reduce the visual impact and shadowing you can sometimes get from traditional fan blades underneath a ceiling light.
Everything can also be operated using a remote control.
The light and ceiling fan can be controlled independently, you can adjust the fan speed and, perhaps most importantly when you’re in bed on a hot night, you don't have to get back up to mess around with the light switch.
There’s also a summer and winter setting.
During summer, the fan pushes air downwards to create that cooling breeze you actually want when the bedroom is roasting.
In winter, the direction can be reversed. Instead of blowing directly down onto you, it helps circulate the warmer air around the room without creating the same cooling draft.
So although the customer bought it primarily to make the bedroom more comfortable during the hot weather, it can actually be useful throughout the year.
Overall, I was really impressed with this ceiling fan light and, more importantly, the customer was really happy with it.
