The first point Quality Electricians want to address is that you should not have to open your window to get rid of steam in the bathroom. That's what extractor fans are for.
It often becomes a problem when steam, musty smells linger and excess moisture settles on bathroom fixtures. The issue might be that the extractor fan is faulty or could be outdated. I often work with local residents across Bradford who upgrade the shower to a more powerful system. An older extractor fan system might not be compatible with modern showers leading to excess steam build up. My recommendation would be an extractor fan replacement so you can enjoy hot showers without the need to open windows.
Back to top1) What does an extractor fan do?
An extractor fan draws moisture rich, humid and smelly air from areas like bath and shower rooms, expelling it outside through a ducting system. Without an efficient extractor fan system, you will find condensation builds up, leading to problems such as the development of mould on bathroom fixtures.
When customers get in touch with concerns about the extractor fan, they often say that they keep the window open to help drive steam out. In doing so, you actually make the steam settle on surfaces faster and make your home colder.
Back to top2) How long does a bathroom extractor fan replacement take?
If it's a straightforward and pretty standard replacement, I need between 2-4 hours. This includes replacing the fan into the same footprint, using the same ducting and cabling if in good condition as well as testing the system.
A recent fan replacement at a property on Station Lane took around 6 hours as it involved more complex work. The customer wanted to direct the fan ducting through the loft to gain better aesthetics in the bathroom and to reduce the noise from the fan. As with all jobs, a series of tests is conducted once the new fan is replaced to make sure ventilation rates are met.
Back to top3) How much will a bathroom extractor fan replacement cost?
A standard, straightforward replacement can be anywhere between £150- £200. More complex replacements or new installations such as changing the location of the duct system or installing a silent model which is a top tier system could cost between £250- £500.
Understandably, you might think you can get away with keeping the windows open if the existing extractor fan is sub par. Like I tell most of my clients, Bradford is notorious for its cooler temperatures so opening the window will not only let all the heat out but also make your home much colder than it needs to be.
