Is the extract fan in your Bradford home working as well as it used to? I’m Nathan, your local extract fan specialist at Quality Electrician Bradford and I’m here to tell you about extract fan servicing & why it’s important.
1) What is extract fan servicing?
You’re probably wondering what exactly extract fan servicing is, and you won’t be alone if you don’t know! Many people are unaware that their extractor fan needs any kind of maintenance or servicing once it’s been installed, beyond the odd dusting of the cover once it starts to look a little worse for wear.
Back to top2) Extract fan servicing entails:
- Cleaning or replacing the filter – This helps to ensure better air quality and improves airflow.
- Inspection of fan blades – Checking for any damage that could lower performance.
- Motor testing – This ensures your fan blade is spinning efficiently, lowering the strain on the motor.
- Cleaning the housing and grille – I make sure to remove any build-up of dust, grease or grime within the housing of your extract fan.
- Ducting check – If your extract fan has ducting, I check for blockages and signs of any condensation traps.
3) Why is extract fan servicing important?
Extract fan servicing is important because it keeps your extractor working as it should. Without regular servicing, your extract fan will become less efficient, and you’ll notice condensation beginning to build up. As your extract fan begins to struggle your extraction rate will drop and the motor will start to struggle. Servicing the extract fan at your Bradford area home helps to extend its lifespan and ensures your manufacturer warranty remains valid.
Back to top4) Who can carry out extract fan servicing?
Whilst you should definitely be giving the external parts of your extract fan a regular dry dust or gentle hoover, it’s best to leave a full service to a professional such as myself. The first thing to remember is that an extract fan is an electrical appliance and there is a risk of electric shock if you don’t know what you are doing. You certainly don’t want to be poking around inside the fan if you haven’t turned the power supply off!
Secondly, there are a lot of extract fan systems on the market, and each installation will have its individual quirks. If you attempt to service it yourself, you could end up damaging the extract fan system, which can be a costly mistake. I have experience in servicing all kinds of different extract fan systems and can help keep yours in tip top condition.
Back to top5) How often should my extract fan be serviced?
Whilst there’s no fixed schedule for when you should have your extract fan serviced, these are the suggested intervals to ensure longevity and the long-term reliability of your system:
- PIV systems: every 5 years
- MVHR / MEV - Once per year
- Extract fans / cooker hoods: every 6–12 months
Top tip: If your bathroom or kitchen windows start steaming up more than usual, it’s a sign your fan needs a clean!
