What to look for in an EICR Electrician?

When choosing your EICR electrician there are three key areas to look at:

1. Experience – 

   Choose an electrician who is experienced in EICR inspections. They will be thorough, knowledgeable, and able to complete your EICR in a reasonable timeframe. If you are a landlord, it is particularly important that your electrician is experienced in EICR’s of rental properties. A great way to check your electrician is experienced (and reliable) is to look at their online reviews.

2. Qualifications – 

   To legally complete an EICR, an electrician must be both qualified and competent. They must understand the rules and regulations surrounding electrical inspections and be capable of carrying out an in depth visual and physical inspection of your property. Ask your prospective electrician about their qualifications, they will be happy to advise you.

3. Registered – 

   To ensure the electrician you choose to carry out your EICR is up to the task you should always select one who is registered. Electricians can be registered with either NICEIC or NAPIT. Both bodies require their members to pass stringent checks to gain registered status. They must demonstrate that they work competently, in line with all relevant regulations, and have excellent technical skills.

We’ve all heard the old adage about something being too good to be true and in this case it almost certainly is. Two main problems occur with the cheap inspections. Firstly, they may be recouping their costs by adding spurious codes to your EICR that require remedial works. Remedial works that they then undertake at a greater cost to you than a properly conducted EICR would have cost. Secondly, they may also complete their EICR inspection in a very short space of time – an hour or so for some. This short inspection time means very little testing is actually taking place and you cannot be certain than your property is electrically safe. As the landlord of the property, the onus is on you to instruct a “qualified and competent” person to carry out your EICR. Should you choose a cheap EICR inspection, and they fail to spot a dangerous issue, you will be liable should anything go wrong.
