1) Electric Meter Cupboard Door Replacement
If your electric meter cupboard door is broken, missing, warped, or no longer sealing properly, it’s something that’s worth dealing with sooner rather than later.
That cupboard isn’t just there to tidy things up. It protects some of the most important electrical equipment in your home — the point where the electricity supply enters the property.
If water gets into that cupboard, it can cause real problems. In the worst cases, it can leave you without power for hours while faults are investigated and repairs are carried out.

2) Why the meter cupboard door is so important
Your electric meter cupboard is designed to keep critical electrical parts dry, secure, and protected from the elements.
Inside, you’ll usually find:
- Your electricity meter
- Incoming supply equipment
- Main isolators
- On many homes now, there’s also:
- EV charger consumer units
- Solar PV isolators or fuse boards
All of this equipment should be kept weatherproof and enclosed.
If the door is cracked, loose, missing, or won’t close properly, rain and damp can get inside. Over time, that can lead to corrosion, nuisance tripping, loss of supply, or damage that’s expensive to put right.
In short, a working, well-sealed cupboard door helps keep your electrics safe and reliable.

3) Common problems I see with meter cupboard doors
Around Bradford, I regularly come across meter cupboards with:
- Broken or snapped hinges
- Doors that won’t shut or stay closed
- Warped plastic doors letting water in
- Missing doors altogether
Sometimes the issue is just age and weathering. Other times it’s been damaged during previous work or simply never fitted very well in the first place.

4) How meter cupboard doors can be repaired or replaced
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all fix — it depends on the condition of the existing cupboard.
If the outer frame is still in good condition, it’s often possible to:
- Measure the opening
- Supply a replacement door
- Fit it so it closes properly and seals as it should
If the frame or box itself is damaged, the best option may be:
- Removing the old enclosure
- Installing a new external meter box and frame
- Ensuring everything is sealed correctly against the wall
I’ll always talk you through the options and recommend the most sensible solution.

5) What the process looks like
When you get in touch about a meter cupboard door problem:
- I’ll arrange a visit to inspect the cupboard
- Take accurate measurements
- Check the condition of the door, frame, and enclosure
- Advise whether a door replacement or full box replacement is needed
Once that’s done, I’ll provide a clear quote for the work so you know exactly where you stand.

7) Gas meter cupboard doors – important note
It’s worth noting that gas meter cupboards are different to electric meter cupboards and have much stricter rules around what work can be carried out.
Gas meter cupboards must be sealed correctly so that, in the event of a gas leak, gas is safely vented outside and cannot enter the property. That sealing work must be carried out by a qualified gas engineer using the correct sealants and methods.
Because of this, there are clear limits on what I can do:
✔️ I can replace the gas meter cupboard door only, provided the existing frame and box are not damaged
✔️ The replacement will be a like-for-like door, with clip-in hinges where applicable
❌ I cannot modify the frame, box, or seals in any way
❌ I do not carry out any sealing work on gas meter cupboards
If the frame or enclosure is damaged, or if sealing work is required, that work must be handled by a gas engineer.
